Jelena Iljinitschna Poljonowa (rus.Елена Ильинична Полёнова) is a giant of women handball with 2,00m tall and 98kilos. She won WC twice, Olympic silver medal and some Euro medals as well. Also in 2008 she was the leader of Zvezda Zvenigorod - the team which won the women's Champions League. That season was the 2nd best scorer of CL. I don't know why she dissapeared from the top of women handball after 2009/10 season when she left the club of Zvezda. I didn't find any info about the reason and it looks very strange if she retired at the age of 27(born 1983). And I expect that somewhere will be some news when so famous player retired. Also I didn't find any info on her last club(Zvezda Zvenigorod) website.
Does someone know anything about her?? Will she come back to playing handball? |

Hard to trace her as Russian names can have several translations.
I found the most informations about her under the name Elena Polenova.
After Zvenigorod, she played last season with Astrakhan. And now she is playing with Le Havre, in France.
I don't know if she's still playing with Russian national team, but she didn't quit playing for sure. Le Havre is a top french team.

Thank you a lot for that info. I must say that I search for infos in several languages but I couldn't find anything after 2010 when she left Zvezda. Unfortunately I don't understand french language almost. With german and russian a little bit better, but also not very good.
I don't know how it's possible that I didn't search on russian clubs websites, only the articles.
Elena Polenova I know is the most popular translation, but it's wrong(it would be good for the surname Полeнова, not Полёнова).
Le Havre I didn't know a lot, but I found that it was 6th team last season ever. In women handball you have great Allison Pineau - one of the best women playmakers and propably the best black-skin player(in male division it's surely Abalo or Dinart also from France). |
